For a Cause

It probably started with the trees on Mahatma Gandhi Road, but the trend has continued….

Once upon a time, the Bangalore administration was known for designing beautiful layouts, with the streets not being just streets but avenues…avenues are tree-lined streets, by definition. And Bangalore is one of the few cities in the world where imagination was used even in the planting of these trees…care was taken to see that throughout the year, different trees blossomed, resulting in serial flowering, that kept our city a delight to the eyes.

But then, Bangalore became successful. And the administrators started giving the go-by to greenery, beauty or aesthetics. Money became the name of the game. More people and a moribund public transport system meant more private vehicles. And to accommodate more and more traffic, road-widening was done, at the cost of the trees.

Trees were cut down in the name of progress. Initially, everyone accepted it and it didn’t make too much of a difference…this apathy became the lever which the administration used to prise ever more trees out of the earth.

Even as I write, there has been a news report that 46 important roads will be “widened” with immediate effect. As citizens of Bangalore, we have been fighting this step, questioning the need for wider roads without limiting the traffic that flows through the city’s central areas. We are appalled that the administration is going ahead in spite of our protests.

One of the roads already decimated is Race Course Road..and soon, one of the most beautiful avenues of South Bangalore, Nanda Road, will follow, unless we do something about it.

Yes…WE. Each and every one of us. We can’t keep going about our daily business, not bothering. We HAVE to protest strongly enough for the administration to hear our voices.

We are trying to formulate a way to do this.

We are counting on the support of other concerned citizens of Bangalore.

We do not want progress at the cost of the beauty of our city and the quality of life.

Save Nanda Road is, therefore, a symbolic act, representing… Save the Roads of Bangalore from becoming arid deserts of cement and concrete.

To participate  in preventing the authorities from destroying such a beautiful road. Support the cause in any way you can, Even adding yourself to this Wiki Page will do…
